Sandra is a maker of artist books, printed images and paper installations incorporating distinctive textural monoprinting techniques. By working ‘outside the frame’ she explores multiple perspectives, playing with repetition, pattern, and non-traditional surfaces.
Her art responds to ideas relating to nature-human conflicts, investigating the notion of boundaries, domestication, and the manipulation of landscape. She is particularly interested in the impact of urbanisation on the biodiversity of native wildlife and plants.
The stories in her work are drawn from her imagination and curiosity about the natural world and often incorporate recollections of childhood relationships with her favourite wild places. This self-reflection fosters a consciousness that she is a part of the natural world, and through her art develops a deeper connection and sense of place in today’s changing landscape.
Over the past ten years, Sandra has exhibited widely in both regional and private art galleries, with several solo exhibitions. Her artist books have been acquired by the State Library of Queensland for their artist book collection and she was a finalist in the 2016 Libris Awards: Australian Artists Book Prize.
Sandra has completed several artist-in-residence community programs, most recently at Cataract Gorge in Tasmania. She has also had many years’ experience in facilitating printmaking and book art workshops for regional galleries and other arts organisations. Sandra has successfully curated several exhibitions, including a major project for PaperMakers and Artists Queensland in 2014/5.
